Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state.  The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region.  The ETHS educational mission is to engage the public with the message that history is important.

This Day In East Tennessee History

  • April 21, 1797

On this day in 1797, William Blount wrote a letter of instruction to James Carey, and illiterate interpreter in the employ of the federal government, regarding the conspiracy Blount was involved in. The conspiracy was designed to promote the British conquest of Louisiana and the Floridas, which were currently owned by Spain.
